2018 Elections
A state law denying judges an opportunity to be sworn in after they have reached the age of 70 may play a part in two judicial races this fall.
Leelanau County Probate Judge Larry Nelson and 86th District Court Judge Thomas J. Phillips may not run for re-election. Consequently,
no incumbents will be running in 2018 to  ll six-year terms for the two judgeship positions.
Several candidates had already  led to run before the Leelanau Pages went to print.

The Leelanau County Probate Court has jurisdiction over guardianships, conservatorships, the commitment for hospital care of the mentally ill, administration of estates and trusts, protective proceedings and wills, and a few other miscellaneous matters.
In addition, Probate Court has assumed some District Court responsibilities.
The Family Division in the Circuit Court handles matters of juvenile delinquency, abuse and neglect, adoptions, name changes, emancipations of minors, and other ancillary family matters.
