“Aboard Mir, Jerry (Linenger, Suttons Bay resident and former astronaut) logged 50 million miles, more than two thousand orbits around the Earth at an average speed of 18,000 miles an hour. He had decided he wanted to use his time on Mir to become a world-class geographer. As a result, he took more than 10,000 photographs from space (many of which have
become classic) and he observed and memorized the features of the world. He compiled a list of his five favorite places on the planet: the Himalayas, the Great Barrier reef, the Caribbean, Japan and the northwest section of Michigan. Yes,
he could see it clearly from space: Lake Michigan, Grand Traverse Bay, and Traverse City at night.”
— The Story Next Door, by Leland resident
Scott Craig. 2013.
